A new community center coming to Milwaukee’s Near West Side neighborhood is getting a major boost in funding. The vacant building at the corner of North 27th and West Wells streets is being transformed into a comprehensive resource center for families.”I welcome this community center right in our area where they can get additional resources,” Gov. Tony Evers said Wednesday morning. “I am proud to announce today that we are partnering with the Near West Side Partners to invest $5 million in our American Rescue Plan Act funds.”Concordia 27 is a resident-driven project aimed at providing easy access to food, health and wellness services, job training, housing and transportation.”I have seen firsthand the need for quality, safe and affordable housing in our neighborhood. I have also seen my clients and neighbors who need additional support with employment and access to fresh foods,” Evers said.Once complete, the center will feature 30 affordable housing units for seniors and working families, daily fresh meals to go, a culinary test kitchen and convenient access to transportation through an MCTS rapid transit line.”This will help and not just Milwaukee but helps create a stronger, healthier, more equitable state that really does work for everybody,” Evers said.It’s not clear when the new community center might open.Organizers said they were working to secure additional funding and partners.
