Download Store Safety Tips

It’s usually tempting to download different types of digital content off of the Internet, especially now that so many new programs are being created. But if you’re not careful when choosing the download store to use, your device could end up infected by malware. The following will help you keep safe as you purchase items from a download store:

1. Stay away from automatic downloads.

From time to time, you may stumble upon a site that will try to download and install software on your computer automatically, meaning, whether or not you asked it to. Avoid these sites at all costs, unless you’re sure of its trustworthiness. Drive-by or automatic downloads are most often an attempt by infected sites to save malware to your computer. When you do encounter them, reject these downloads immediately. Click the Cancel button as quickly as possible or simply close out your browser. If you failed to stop the download and the file is already in your computer, give it a virus scan or just delete it straight away. Do not open the file, unless you have confirmed it is safe.

2. Buy products only from trusted sources.

The first cardinal rule in using download stores is to choose one that is well-established and reputable. More than anything, you have to consider the site’s safety and dependability. Luckily, a quick search online can give you all you need to know about a particular download store before you begin downloading.

When purchasing software, do not accept and begin the download unless you have read and understood the documentation. There are many sites on the Internet that review software, so go ahead and visit them to give you more peace of mind. Make sure these are independent sites, however, and not marketing sites maintained by the developers themselves.

3. Put your antivirus software to use to check potential downloads.

Having solid antivirus software that’s updated is one of your best safeguards against system threats. This software must be used for file scanning before installation. You can usually do this by right-clicking on the particular file and clicking the scan option. The antivirus software will check the downloaded software and tell you whether or not it’s safe to install.

4. Check the file specs for signs of authenticity.

One way to check a file’s authenticity is by comparing its file name and size to what’s listed on the download store’s website. File specs can be found in Properties (right-click on the file). Any disparities could indicate that the file is contaminated.

The tips above are but some that you have to practice when purchasing digital content from download stores. Needless to say, never ever download any file unless you have ascertained its safety.
